Tom Yum Goong Banglamphu is a local gem located close to Khao San Road and serves some of the tastiest seafood in Bangkok. Tom Yum Goong Banglamphu does not have the looks but sure has the flavour. In this article, we discuss the most recommended foods and why you must visit this place.
Tom Yum Goong Banglamphu is more of a street food vendor that serves amazing seafood dishes. You can spot Tom Yum Goong Banglamphu by its large amount of seafood displayed at the front of the shop. The shop is extremely local, meaning that you have to sit on plastic chairs at aluminium tables underneath a tent. In recent years, Tom Yum Goong Banglamphu’s creations didn’t get unnoticed and gained popularity. Nowadays people have to get in line during dinner time as it’s so busy. Luckily the food is served quickly and within fifteen minutes you will have a table.
There is no menu available at Tom Yum Goong Banglamphu and the staff does not speak English. But with this article, you will be able to order their most famous food. The main attraction is, as the name of the restaurant already suggests, their Tom Yum Goong (150 THB). The soup here is authentically spicy, so be aware. The soup is not creamy like the tom yum at Pe Aor. Instead, it’s more watery, yet packed with flavours. The best part of the soup at Tom Yum Goong Banglamphu is the large prawns. I would recommend everyone who stays near Khao San Road to visit Tom Yum Goong Banglamphu for this heavenly soup.
Another highly recommended dish is the Pla Goong (200 THB), which is a spicy Thai shrimp salad. What makes it so good is the dressing. This perfectly balanced dressing is packed with sweet, sour and spicy flavours. Together with the local herbs that are being used, you will get one of the most flavorful shrimps Bangkok has to offer. Again, this dish is spicy! A great alternative for those who don’t like spicy food is the Fried Shrimp with Garlic (200 THB). Large prawns are covered in a more sweet dressing with plenty of garlic on top.
The last dish that I recommend is the Hoy Lai Pad Nam Prik Pao (100 THB), which are fried clams covered in a herby chilli dressing and fried Thai basil. Although the quality of the clams is great, this meal is not really filling. I suggest ordering this as a side dish which you can easily share with two. The flavour of these clams is so different than the other recommended dishes that it’s a bit unfortunate to not try it.
Overall verdict: Tom Yum Goong Banglamphu is an amazing local restaurant to get authentic seafood dishes, such as their signature Tom Yum Goong. If you can handle the spiciness and don’t mind eating at such a local eatery, this is the place you must have visited!
