Nowadays, with several branches spread over Southeast Asia, you can fairly say that MAYs restaurant is a successful organization and does some things really well. In this article, I will tell you all about what makes MAYs restaurant so good and I will review the restaurants MAYs Bangkok and MAYs Pattaya.

MAYs Urban Thai Dine was founded by Ms. May in 2014 after successfully ran a food stall at a food market in Pattaya. Before she started this food stall, she worked in the hospitality industry in several foreign countries. With all her knowledge and passion, she wanted to start something for her own and with success: in the very same year, after she opened the food stall, she got her own restaurant in Pattaya as the food stall became too popular. But what was so different and better that people bitterly waited for an hour to try her food? Her secret was she used traditional recipes but without certain flavour enhancers. For example, instead of using excessive usage of sugar, she uses fruit to sweeten up the dishes.

But it’s not only the food that makes MAYs restaurant such a popular place to eat. With years of experience in hospitality, the service and ambience of the restaurants are impressive too. For example, you will receive a cold towel and a welcomes drink at arrival and you receive a complimentary amuse. All of this was noticed by investors and MAYs Urban Thai Dine is nowadays a franchise with four branches spread over Southeast Asia, respectively in Bangkok, Pattaya and Ho Chi Minh City.

MAYs Pattaya

Mays Pattaya is located at Thepprasit Road in Pattaya and this is the place where it all started. The restaurant is the oldest restaurant of all franchise restaurants but does not look outdated, although the difference in the interior with for example the branch in Bangkok is large. MAYs Pattaya is nicely decorated in the same way as MAYs Bangkok, with dark painted walls, a variety of indoor plants and shiny cutlery. The menu of the restaurants is not the exact same. I would recommend you trying one of the following dishes at MAYs Pattaya:

Pineapple Fried Rice (250 THB)

We were pleasantly surprised how delicious this simple dish was and in our opinion, this was seriously the most delicious dish we tried here. Normally, a pineapple fried rice can be too sweet but this version was so nicely hearty, something I’ve never tasted before. Food doesn’t have to be complicated, and this is the perfect example of it.

MAYs Curry with Duck (380 THB)

This is the signature curry of MAYs Restaurant and is highly recommended. The curry paste is completely homemade and the sweetening of the curry comes from the use of fruits. The curry is nicely creamy, heavily spiced and served with noodles and roti. I would highly recommend this signature curry as it’s really well flavoured with the right amount of spiciness.

Deep-Fried Seabass with Tamarind Sauce (420 THB)

One of the tasty seafood options at Mays Pattaya is their Deep-Fried Seabass with Tamarind Sauce (420 THB). Not only does this dish looks amazing, but the taste is also amazing too. The sea bass has been filleted up front, making the chunks of fish nicely crunchy and the chef is able to remove all the fish bones. The sea bass is covered in a sweet tamarind sauce. This seafood option is perfect to share with friends and as the sauce is not spicy at all, it’s a safe option for those who don’t like spicy food.

Spicy Mussel Salad (260 THB)

Start your dinner with this spicy mussel salad that is packed with local herbs and plenty of chillies. The mussels are of decent size and are covered in a sweet and sour dressing and topped with crunchy fried onions.

Sticky Rice with Lychee and Mango (190 THB)

And if you have room for dessert, I would recommend finishing your dining experience with this delicious Thai classic. Apart from the beautiful presentation, the mangos are perfectly ripe and an extra bowl of sweetened coconut milk to dip the mangos in is served as well. I think this dish proves exactly what Mays stands for: original Thai dishes made from high-quality ingredients, beautifully presented and without flavour enhancers like MSG.

Overall verdict of MAYs Pattaya

The original MAYs in Pattaya is, in my opinion, one of the nicest local restaurants in town. The food is really tasty, the presentation is spot on and the service excellent. The restaurant is older than other branches but that’s not a bad thing in my opinion. The restaurant feels homey and original and still looks good. It’s a restaurant where you invite your friends and family and where you can all enjoy a really good food experience.

MAYs Bangkok

MAYs Bangkok is located at Sukhumvit Soi 12 near Asok BTS Station. As mentioned earlier, the restaurant is newer and looks really nice with a mix of dark-themed rustic walls, chairs and tables and a variety of indoor plants, good lighting and golden coloured cutlery. But as the restaurant is a franchise, the similarities are endless including the food. The menu is basically the same, with here and there a twist or a minor visual adjustment, but flavour-wise, MAYs Bangkok is the exact same as MAYs Pattaya with the exact same philosophy. The dishes described in the previous paragraph can also be ordered at MAYs Bangkok and are recommended, but during our visit to MAYs Bangkok, the following dishes were recommended by the staff and manager themselves.

Stir-Fried Chicken with Hot Basil (250 THB)

Delicious food does not have to be complicated and this pad kra pao is the perfect example of it. Clean and nicely presented food with the exact right flavouring, served with a perfect fried egg. We choose to get the chicken version of it, but you can also order this with either pork or shrimps.

Seabass with Yellow Curry (490 THB)

Although the deep-fried seabags with tamarind sauce, which is recommended earlier in this article, one of the signature dishes of MAYs restaurant, this sea bass covered in yellow curry is definitely as tasty. Nicely spiced curries with deep-fried fish like a sea bass is just a really good combination! This sea bass is also filleted before it was deep-fried, making it extra crunchy and you won’t find any fishbone in the filets.

Pomelo Salad with Prawns and Chicken (180 THB)

Having a good tasting dinner is all about different flavour combinations. What makes this pomelo salad so recommended is that this salad is dominantly sour and fresh, which goes so well with spicy food like the stir-fried chicken with hot basil described above. You might not order it as a stand-alone dish, but when you order several dishes to share together with your friends, this pomelo salad is a must-order.

Homemade Coconut Ice Cream (190 THB)

Would you like to finish your meal with a tasty and spectacular dessert? The homemade coconut ice cream is the dessert you want to order. With the help of liquid nitrogen, the coconut ice gets a fantastic entrance with smoke covered all over the table. On top of the golden-coloured bowl are two scoops of homemade coconut ice cream topped with jackfruit and roasted peanuts. Due to the use of liquid nitrogen, the scoops of ice cream gets an extra icy crust. A really delicious treat and a fun way to finish your dinner.

Overall verdict of MAYs Bangkok

When it comes to the food, MAYs Bangkok is as good as MAYs Pattaya, with a slightly better presentation. As the branch is newer compared to MAYs Pattaya, the interior looks fresher. But in my opinion, it would not make a big difference whether you visit MAYs Bangkok or MAYs Pattaya. Both serve excellent food and have an eye for detail when it comes to great service. If you have the chance to visit MAYs Bangkok, I would highly recommend you to do so. If you only have the chance to visit MAYs Pattaya, I would highly recommend doing so. It’s really tasty food with good ambience and clean, well-prepared food.
