Khao Soi Khun Yai is one of the most popular restaurants in Chiang Mai that serves the Northern Thai curry named Khao Soi. Although there is always a debate who serves the best version in town, it’s commonly known that Khao Soi Khun Yai belongs to the top. Reason enough to write a detailed review of this popular place.
Khao Soi Khun Yai is located in the northern parts of the old city of Chiang Mai at Sri Poom Road. It’s a little bit difficult to find as the outside of the building does not look like a typical restaurant. Underneath this paragraph, you will find a picture of the front of the restaurant, which helps you find Khao Soi Khun Yai. Another thing that you have to keep in mind is that Khao Soi Khun Yai is only open from ten o’clock in the morning until two o’clock in the afternoon. Khao Soi Khun Yai is a small place capable of serving six tables per time. Because of the small dining area, the short opening times and popularity, you can imagine that it will get busy during lunchtime. Also, on extremely busy days, they can run out of stock.
Khao Soi Khun Yai is your typical Thai local eatery with wooden tables, plastic stools, electric fans positioned at each table and friendly staff who work incredibly hard so that you don’t have to wait long for your food. The menu at Khao Soi Khun Yai is simple. As the name already suggests and as I mentioned in the intro, the main attraction here is their delicious khao soi. In the back of the restaurant, this curry is simmering and the smell is already amazing. The curry is available with pork, beef and chicken, which is what most people order. The beef version costs 50-60 bath per bowl, while the chicken and pork versions cost 40-50 THB per bowl. Before serving, a dash of coconut cream will be added. The Khao Soi is served with red onion, lime and pickles, which is what you already get when ordering Khao Soi. This serves as the usual salt and pepper what Westerns are used to. Add it to your satisfaction and enjoy one of the best Khao Soi in town and perhaps the country. Does Khao Soi Khun Yai only serve Khao Soi? No, even though it’s what the majority of its visitors do order, there are two other options as well. The first option is the Noodle Soup with Pork (30 THB). This nicely spiced noodle soup is served with pork balls, minced pork and slices of pork and is topped with crispy wonton. The other option is the Northern Thai classic Nam Ngiao Kanom Jeen Nam Ngiew (40 THB), which is a tomato-based noodle curry served with the adventurous ingredient blood curd, something Thai absolutely love. Both of these dishes do taste good, but if you have a small appetite I would stick to their famous Khao Soi.
Overall verdict: as Chiang Mai is known for its Khao Soi, visiting one of Chiang Mai’s best Khao Soi restaurants is an absolute must for every foodie. I can guarantee you will absolutely love the heroines and creaminess of this non-spicy curry. Although there are several other restaurants that serve top quality Khao Soi close by, Khao Soi Khun Yai is simply something special. Maybe it’s because of the limited opening times, or the whole atmosphere, or simply because the Khao Soi is amazing.
