Jeh O Chula is one of our favourite local restaurants in Bangkok, located close to Chulalongkorn University and National Stadium BTS Station. Jeh O Chula is famed for its unique twist on Tom Yum soup, made with instant Mama Noodles. This has become a popular comfort dish with Bangkok locals, especially students from the nearby university. But Jeh O Chula offers more than its signature pimped instant noodle soups. In this article, we will recommend other amazing creations packed with tons of spices. Jeh O Chula is one of the most popular local eateries in town and queues can stretch for up to 90 minutes in the evening, so we always arrive before they open at 17:30 to beat the rush.

Jeh O Chula Bangkok

The restaurant itself has your typical Thai decor, a white tile floor, white walls, aluminium tables and stools and TVs broadcasting random Thai shows. The interior is nothing to write home about but you don’t go to Jeh O Chula for the ambience, you go for the food. In our personal experience, these not-too-fancy looking restaurants that have a long queue of hungry locals waiting for a few unimaginably famous dishes are the ultimate Bangkok-foodie experiences. In general, the owners of these restaurants have d years of experience in preparing one or two very specific dishes that they, over the years, turned into perfected recipes. We can guarantee that Jeh O Chula is one of those restaurants. If you are looking for more restaurants like Jeh O Chula, have a look at the best local Thai restaurants in Bangkok.

What to order at Jeh O Chula?

As the title of this article already suggests, Jeh O Chula is specialized in local Thai food but with a surprisingly delicious twist that gives the food a completely new dimension. It is this signature twist that makes the customers come back and the reason why you have to wait in line. One of the dishes we ordered was the Spicy Salmon Salad (250 THB), our personal favourite dish at Jeh O Chula. This spicy salad is made with fresh chunks of salmon, which are of excellent quality. The twist of this salad is the traditional spicy dressing. This Thai-fusion salad is namely prepared with your typical Thai spicy dressing which means it’s really flavourful and has plenty of spice, which complements the salmon perfectly.

Another unusual dish we tried at Jeh O Chula is their Shrimp with Tofu (200 THB). This creation is something we haven’t seen anywhere else in Bangkok. The fried battered shrimp and tofu is prepared with a delicious garlic dressing and the tofu has a perfectly crispy coating but remains soft and fluffy on the inside. It's the added tofu that gives this dish a surprisingly delicious twist in texture and flavour and is, therefore, another highly recommended dish at this widely popular local restaurant.

Whoever said the Crispy Pork at Mr. Jo is the best in town has never been to Jeh O Chula! The level of crispiness is comparable with the legendary crispy pork vendor "Mr. Jo". The beautifully presented Crispy Pork (100 THB) is incredibly crunchy, yet it keeps its succulent core. The crispy pork is served with a delicious soy sauce. For only one hundred Thai Baht you can enjoy this deliciousness and you would be stupid if you won't order this!

Another highly recommended dish at Jeh O Chula is their Golden Brown Duck (200 THB). Duck like this is a typical Thai-Chinese meal, and Jeh O’s version is very well-executed with a not-too-fat, yet beautifully tender duck leg covered in salty gravy and fried garlic.

The most famous dish at Jeh O Chula is their Tom Yum Mama Noodles (250 THB), served with instant Mama Noodles and a variety of ingredients, rather than just traditional shrimp. This is a noodle dish with a twist you won't find anywhere else in the country. We prefer the version with crispy pork, shrimp, squid, raw egg and pork balls. Cheaper versions come with simply crispy pork or pork meatballs (120 THB). Keep in mind that this famous dish is only available after eleven o'clock in the evening. The premium crab Tom Yum Mama Noodles (800 THB) is a real hit and results in even longer late-night queues.

Overall verdict: Jeh O Chula may be famous for its Mama Noodles Tom Yum, but don’t forget to order their other top-notch dishes! Even though we gave all the dishes a five-star rating, our favourites are still the Spicy Salmon Salad and Fried Tofu with Shrimp. If you don’t want to queue, arrive here just before they open around 17:30, as the queues will get longer late into the night.
