The best cheap restaurants in Sukhumvit are:
1. Tamnak Isan
Tamnak Isan is a popular restaurant in Ekkemai that’s specialized in typical Isaan foods, which is the Northeastern Thai cuisine. The menu offers a wide variety of papaya salads which can be combined with one of the many grilled and deep-fried meats. For example, a good combination is the Corn Salad (85 THB) with Grilled Pork Neck (90 THB). The latter is not as fat as you’re used to and the spicy Jaew-sauce is really tasty. The Fried Chicken Wings (150 THB) are really tasty too with a nice garlicky flavour and the chicken meat is juicy. 2. Hoi-Tod Chaw-Lae Restaurant
Hoi Thod is a crispy oyster omelette that is quite satisfying to eat but is definitely not the healthiest option. But every once in a while, I like to eat that crispy and greasy treat. Hoi-Tod Chaw-Lae Restaurant is a popular eatery that serves among the crispiest versions you can find in the city. A regular version of Hoi-Tod costs you 100 THB per plate, while the version with a seafood mix costs 150 THB. Like many other Hoi Thod sellers, there is also a spongy, non-crispy version available, which is called Or-Suan (150 THB). Personally, I prefer the crispy version of it. 3. Inter
Inter is a hugely popular Thai restaurant located in Siam that is known for its large variety of affordable Thai dishes. In an area where you find plenty of expensive eateries, Inter stands out by offering the opposite. During peak hours, this two-story building is completely packed with hungry locals and foreigners. While the menu is large, there are some best-sellers that are ordered by the majority. Highlights include Fried Pork Spareribs with Garlic (120 THB), Green Curry with Chicken (100 THB) and the Roasted Duck in Coconut Milk Red Curry (110 THB). My personal favourite is the Oyster Salad (120 THB), which is a slightly sweet oyster salad with all sorts of fresh herbs and crispy fried onions on top of it. The oysters are enormous! 4. Ma La Gor Tor Krok
Ma La Gor Tor Krok is one of the many food stands located at W District, a food and beer garden near Phra Khanong BTS Station. Although the food at W District is not that cheap as you can find all sorts of international food vendors, including Greek, Mexican and Korean food, the Thai food is definitely cheap. This shop is always open at 16:00 and from that moment on, people keep ordering food until the shop closes at midnight. Highlights are the Laab Moo (110 THB), the Papaya Salad with Cockles (150 THB) and the Spicy Pork Spare Ribs Soup (110 THB). Enjoy spicy, authentic Thai food with an ice-cold beer. 5. Bamee Kon Sae Lee
Bamee Kon Sae Lee is a restaurant that we recommended many times as the noodles that are served here are extraordinary. But it’s not only the noodles that are so tasty, their signature Roast Duck and Crispy Pork are outstanding too. The restaurant is located close to Thonglor BTS and is in business since 1956. During all those years, they fine-tuned their recipes. Egg Noodles with Prawns & Pork (50 THB) is one of their bestsellers and I absolutely love the taste and texture. Both the duck and the pork can be ordered as individual dishes, for those with a large appetite, as well as an ingredient in one of the many different noodles they serve. 6. Khao Jao
Khao Jao is a small, affordable restaurant in Sukhumvit that serves tasty Thai food in a neighbourhood where you mainly find upscale restaurants. Because of this, Khao Jao is quite the popular go-to during lunch and dinner. Highlights of the menu include their Dry Fried Green Curry Seafood (100 THB), Pork with Yellow Curry Paste (80 THB) and Sato Fried Shrimp Paste (120 THB), all of which are Southern Thai dishes. The Southern Thai Cuisine is known for its spiciness, so be aware. 7. Arunwan
This restaurant, which is recommended by Michelin Guide, has quite an adventurous menu to offer: it offers noodle soups with intestines. I have to admit, eating liver and stomach is not something I personally like, which makes it a bit hard to recommend it to others. However, to my surprise, this restaurant is most of the time completely full of customers. The popularity of this place is impressive and during my travels, I noticed that even foreigners (Westerners) do like to eat things like liver and tripe. Therefore, for those who do like these somewhat scary ingredients, Arunwan is definitely worth checking. The most popular noodle soup is their Pork Filet Soup with Intestines (80 THB). The Roll Noodle Soup with Maw and Crispy Pork (80 THB) as well as the Egg Noodle with Wonton and Crispy Pork (80 THB) are much safer bets as these dishes don’t contain any intestines. Their homemade Crispy Fried Wonton (50 THB) are an excellent starter and for a price like that, you’d be stupid not to order it. 8. Klang Soi
Klang Soi is a kind of restaurant where the younger generation takes their parents and grandparents on a Sunday afternoon. It offers tasty, affordable food while the restaurant itself is well decorated. The menu of Klang Soi is a bit complicated as the translation is not done well. Some of the recommended dishes are: Pad Ped Pla Duk (165 THB), which is a catfish red curry with Thai eggplant, and Yum Pomelo (150 THB), which is a spicy and sour pomelo salad with bits of fish, pork and prawns in it and the Beef Green Curry (180 THB), which is an excellent dish and the curry itself is nicely thick. 9. Yaowarat
This local eatery is located on Sukhumvit Soi 77 opposite popular condominiums. Although the restaurant might not look that inviting on the outside as it’s a typical budget Thai restaurant with aluminium chairs and tables and tiles that are broken, the food they serve here is pretty good. All sorts of typical Thai dishes are available such as Pad Kra Pao, Nam Tok, Chicken with Cashew Nuts and Pad Thai. But the more interesting dishes are the seafood dishes they serve here. Although seafood is often expensive, Yaowarat proves that that doesn’t always have to be the case. The Spicy Glass Noodle Salad (100 THB) is a so-called Yum salad that comes with a decent amount of seafood and plenty of chillies. The Stir-Fried Clams with Curry (80 THB) is much sweeter with decent-sized clams. 10. Je Meaw Sukhumvit 38
Sukhumvit Soi 38 used to be a popular street food area, but due to the new policy, street food vendors often can only serve from designated areas. The street food scene changed drastically over the last years and unfortunately, there is not much left from Soi 38. Je Meaw Sukhumvit Soi 38 is one of the last standing street food vendors and is serving their famous Mango Sticky Rice every evening. If you’re nearby and want to enjoy some of the best versions the city has to offer, then go try their Mango Sticky Rice (80 THB). 11. Phed Mark
Phed Mark is the creation of Mark Wiens and other influential foodies in Bangkok that solely focus on serving Pad Kra Pao. It is located near Ekkemai BTS Station and although the Pad Kra Pao is more expensive than at regular Thai restaurants, the quality of this popular Thai dish is extraordinary. The Pad Kra Pao is drier than regular versions, the portions are large and the perfectly fried egg is from a duck, not a chicken. The level of detail and the almost perfected recipe makes it one of the tastiest Pad Kra Pao you can find in the city, according to us. The Pork version costs you 105 THB while the Beef version costs you 155 THB. Customers can choose between different levels of spiciness and the “less spicy” version already makes your tongue burn. 12. Pier 21
Food courts are an amazing place to find cheap restaurants in Sukhumvit and the most popular one is Pier 21, which is located in the shopping mall Pier 21. It is by far the cheapest food court in the city, but that does not mean that the quality of the food decreases as a result. Some of the food recommendations at Pier 21 are: Pad Thai with Prawns (50 THB) at Hoi Tod Champ Mae Klong, Sweet Mango Sticky Rice (70 THB) at Cheng Sim Ei, Sesame Noodle with Roasted Duck (40 THB) at Dragon X, Kha Moo (60 THB) at Kha Moo Nakornpathom and Spicy Fried Chicken Salad (40 THB) at Zing Zab.

13. M-Cafe
M-Cafe is a popular restaurant right at Phra Khanong BTS Station. In the last years, the development of this area exploded. It was one of the last old neighbourhoods that got modernized. Before that time, M-Cafe was one of the few decent Thai restaurants in this area, but nowadays, there are plenty of slightly upscale, modern restaurants to find here. M-Cafe stuck to what they always did: serve a wide variety of affordable, tasty Thai foods. The menu is extensive with all sorts of classic Thai dishes as well as sandwiches, a variety of Western desserts and other typical Western-style meals. Definitely try out their Crispy Fried Chicken with Lemon Sauce (129 THB), their Red Curry Fried Rice with Salted Egg (79 THB) and Tom Yum Kung (109 THB). 14. Rosdee
Rosdee is a Thai-Chinese restaurant located near Bang Chak BTS, which is quite far from the city centre. However, the food here is impressive and it’s definitely worth the 10-minute BTS ride. First of all, you definitely need to check out their Roasted Duck (150 THB). The duck is not too fat and the skin is nicely crispy. The sliced duck is covered in a delicious, fragrant, sweet sauce. If you can handle a bit of spicy, check out their Prawn Spicy Salad (150 THB). The salad comes with enormous juicy prawns and it is topped with lemongrass and shallots. There are many other typical Thai-Chinese dishes to discover on their 36-page long menu. 15. Lao Garden
Lao Garden is always one of my favourite Thai restaurants near Sukhumvit. The restaurant is located near Habito Mall, which is a mall that’s tucked away from the chaotic main roads. The restaurant itself is built over a canal and is surrounded by plenty of greenery. In the evening, the open-air restaurant is nicely lighted by barbed cable lights. The atmosphere that’s created makes it almost feel that you’re not in Bangkok, but somewhere in the countryside. The food they serve is Laotian and Thai food, but the Laotian food is more Isaan-food, to be honest. Highlights include Laab Kai (100 THB), Pad Kra Pao (120 THB), Deep-fried Pork (120 THB), Grilled Chicken with JAEW Sauce (120 THB) and Som Tam Thai Style (70 THB). 16. Boon Tong Kiat
This local eatery is specialized in Singaporean chicken as well as roasted pork. Singaporean and Hainanese Chicken is basically the same as the Thai dish called Khao Man Gai, although there are some small differences. Khao Man Gai is a tasty dish that you can find at street food vendors and places like Boon Tong Kiat and are ideal for lunch. The steamed chicken is nicely tender and the garlicky rice is much tastier than regular white rice. There are three different dishes that we suggest you try: Roasted Pork Belly (120 THB), Barbecued Pork Spare Ribs (120 THB) and their hugely popular Steamed Chicken with Garlic Rice (67 THB). Flavorful Thai Restaurant is your typical budget restaurant that serves authentic Thai food for a bargain. Although the restaurant might not look that inviting from the outside, the food is seriously tasty and you can see the proof of that by seeing how busy it gets during lunch and dinner time. The restaurant is not necessarily specialized in specific dishes but offers a good variety of tasty classics. Recommended dishes are the Chicken with Cashew Nuts (100 THB), Shrimps Tom Yum (120 THB) and the lovely Seafood Yellow Curry (100 THB). 18. Buay Pochana
Buay Pochana is a restaurant located in Thongor that offers affordable food options, contrary to many other restaurants in this area. This place specialized in duck dishes. The preparation of duck is different from what most tourists from Western countries are used to: in Thailand, they love the jelly fat parts of the duck, whereas in Europe for example, excessive fat is first cut off and then the duck fat gets reduced by frying it. In other words, the duck at Buay Pochana has lots of fat. If you like to eat this kind of duck, then this is the best place to go. The tastiest dish we tried here is the Duck Stewed Noodles in Clay Pot (120 THB). On the bottom of the clay pot, you’ll find a Chinese gravy, perfect to mix with the duck and tasty noodles. This dish is by far the leanest duck of all the food we tried. Other delicious foods at Buay Pochana are the Duck Wonton (80 THB) and the Duck Meat (250 THB). 19. Wattana Panich
Wattana Panich is among the most popular local restaurants in Sukhumvit and it's specialized in certain types of beef noodles. What makes it so unique is that in front of the restaurant, there is a large bowl of beef broth that doesn’t stop boiling at all. Twentyfour-Seven, this fragrant broth is boiling which gives it an incredible taste. In fact, you can smell the fragrance of the broth far outside of the restaurant, when you’re walking nearby. The so-called Gao Lao Neua costs 100 THB and you get a large bowl with this famous broth accompanied by chunks of tender, stewed beef. Absolutely divine. Other tasty noodle soups here are: Goat Stewed Soup (300 THB) and Kuay Teow Neau (100 THB). 20. Hom Duan
Hom Duan is a small restaurant that serves Northern-Thai specialities. Northern-Thai food is richly flavoured but mostly not as spicy as other parts of the Thai gastronomy, making it a popular cuisine for foreigners. The menu is small and but for tourists who have no knowledge about this cuisine, still a bit difficult to understand. We suggest trying out the popular Hanglae (80 THB) and the Khao Soi (80 THB). Both of these dishes are one of the most popular Northern-Thai curries in general and the ones at Hom Duan are excellently flavoured. Another tasty option would be the popular Nam Ngiaw, but this curry has blood curd in it, which most tourists don’t like. 21. Zaew Pork Noodle
This small noodle shop is located between two famous restaurants, namely Bamee Khon Sae Lee and 55 Pochana. Although this shop is often overlooked by foreigners, locals know exactly about this place and especially during lunchtime, this small place is completely packed. Also, at least fifteen delivery guys waiting in front of the restaurant to pick up their orders. On busy days, you often have to wait at least half an hour before getting your noodles, which is pretty long for noodles. What makes it so special? There are several bestsellers, but the Small Noodle with Tomyum Soup (55 THB) and the Big Noodle with Yentafo Soup (55 THB) are the highlights. The tom yum is not creamy, therefore it’s spicier than regular tom yum soups. The best dish I tried here is the Zaew Pork (60 THB), which does not look appetizing but sure is. 22. 55 Pochana
55 Pochana is one of our favourite restaurants in the city as it serves exciting Thai-Chinese food for quite a reasonable price. The Thai food scene in Bangkok is heavily influenced by the Chinese, as Chinese merchants settled a long time ago before Bangkok was the capital city. A capital the size of Bangkok obviously has every type of Thai food available, however, Thai-Chinese food is most common in Bangkok, especially in Yaowarat (Bangkok’s Chinatown). Pochana 55 is not located in Chinatown but is one of the specialists in the city when it comes to delicious Thai-Chinese food. Dishes are available at around 150 - 200 THB, meaning that some of the dishes exceed the 150 THB limit we put in this article. Absolute highlights are Duck Pad Krapow (150 THB), Fried Beef with Black Pepper (200 THB) and Fried Clam with Brown Chili (150 THB). For noodle fans, Rung Rueng serves up some of the best Chinese-inspired noodles in Bangkok. It’s actually two restaurants that sit side-by-side on Sukhumvit Soi 26, run by feuding brothers who use the same family recipe. Our top dish is the Tom Yum flavoured dry Egg Noodles with Pork, but the clear soup flavoured with Minced Pork and topped with Fish Balls or Pork is incredibly popular. It feels like you are dining in someone’s garden, instead of the more expensive parts of Bangkok. Highly recommended dishes are Deep-Fried Sea Bass with Mixed Herbs (300 THB), Grilled Pork Loin (120 THB), Massaman Curry Chicken (160 THB) and the Panang Curry with Shrimp (160 THB).
