Located next to the River Kwai, finding good seafood in Kanchanaburi should not be that difficult, however, the quality of restaurants in this historic town varies enormously. In this article, I will recommend you the best seafood in Kanchanaburi and where you can find it. Keep in mind that I solely focus on the town around the Bridge On The River Kwai and not the complete province itself.
The best seafood in Kanchanaburi are:
Giant Grilled Freshwater Prawns (1,500 THB) at Keeree Tara
Let’s start this list with the best seafood in Kanchanaburi of with some insane seafood: one kilogram of enormous grilled freshwater prawns. You can find this huge plate of deliciousness at Keeree Tara, a beautiful restaurant right next to the river and a perfect view on the Bridge On The River Kwai. The prawns are nicely prepared as they are still really juicy. As the prawns are sliced in half, you can easily scoop out the prawn meat as well as the brains of these creatures. That’s right, I mentioned the brains. It’s this part of the prawn that has the most flavour including the umami. As always in Thailand, the prawns are served with spicy dipping sauce. A plate full of prawns with a weight of one kilogram will cost you 1,500 THB, by far the most expensive seafood option in this list. Other highly recommended seafood options at Keeree Tara are the Spicy Pomelo Salad with Prawns (185 THB) and the Deep-Fried Snake-Head Fish with Spicy Mango Salad (380 THB).

Fried Tub-Tim Fish with Fresh Vegetable and Spicy Sauce Salad (320 THB) at Keeree Mantra
Another highly recommended seafood in Kanchanaburi is this fried ruby fish covered in herbs and vegetables. What you probably don’t see on the picture is that the fish is first filleted and then carved into smaller cubes before deep-fried. Then, the chunks of deep-fried ruby fish are coated in a soy-based dressing, making it caramelized on the outside. The result is a crunchy, sweetened fish which is easy to eat and packed with flavour thanks to all the herbs and vegetables. Similar to the previous restaurant, Keeree Mantra is located at a beautiful location which looks like an oasis. It’s highly recommended to visit one of these two restaurants when you are in Kanchanaburi as you won’t easily find restaurants with the same type of atmosphere. Other highly recommended seafood options are the Thai Steamed Coconut Milk Curry with Fish (160 THB) and the Fried Fish with Thai Herbs (165 THB).

Crispy Fried Small Fish (190 THB) at Tara Buree
Personally, I’m always looking for local specialities or regional ingredients that you won’t easily find elsewhere. During our many visits in Kanchanaburi, we stumbled upon a few ingredients that match these criteria. One was the famous Kanchanaburi mushroom, the other one was this fish. I do not have the exact name of the fish, but at this restaurant, you can enjoy several traditional Thai dishes that are hard to find elsewhere, like this Crispy Fried Small Fish (190 THB). Freshly caught in the morning in the nearby waters of Kanchanaburi, the fish is sun-dried and deep-fried. Do not think you will get a tender fish steak. Instead, you will get a crispy fish that is similar to baked out pork. The fish is served with a soy sauce, making it a sweet, crunchy treat. If you want to enjoy more common Thai seafood at this beautifully located restaurant, I would recommend you trying the Deep-Fried Fish with Fish Sauce (300 THB).

Fried Jumbo Shrimp Topped With Tamarind Sauce (350 THB) at Dejtosapak Restaurant
These crunchy large prawns, which are deep-fried first and have a really crispy coating, can be found at Dejtosapak Restaurant. Like many of the restaurants listed in this seafood in Kanchanaburi article, the restaurant is located next to the river. But what makes Dejtosapak different than the rest, is that it’s located more remotely with mountains in the background and only a few houses built next to the river. This atmosphere, combined with the delicious seafood they serve, makes it a popular place to dine during sunset. Besides the delicious signature jumbo prawns, other highly recommended seafood options are:
Deep-Fried Freshwater Fish in Guinea Pepper Sauce (250 THB) at Loft Restaurant & Bar
Deep-Fried fish steak with crispy skin covered in a peppery dressing and topped with roasted garlic. That’s one of the specialities at Loft Restaurant & Bar, a trendy venue close to the Bridge on the River Kwai. This place opens its doors at 17:00 and starts getting busy just right after sunset. This beautiful restaurant is a cool place for dining as well as having some alcoholic beverages while enjoying the live music performances. In my opinion, you should arrive around 17:30, as the place is still quiet and you can enjoy the fascinating view. Other seafood recommendations are the Spicy Algoe Glass with Seafood and Minced Pork (180 THB) and the Loft Fo (250 THB).
