Kanchanaburi is a popular destination in Thailand for its nature and second world war history. When visiting, you probably wonder what are the best restaurants in Kanchanaburi. Recently, we’ve done a ton of research and visited countless restaurants in Kanchanaburi to give you the best answer to that question. In this article, we split the restaurants into two sections: the best local Thai restaurants in Kanchanaburi and the best international restaurant in Kanchanaburi. As the majority of the Thai restaurants maintain similar pricing on the menu, we grouped all highly recommended restaurants that serve Thai food, instead of dividing them into two different segments.
The restaurants in this article are all located in the Kanchanaburi Tambon Ban Tai area, which is where you will find the Bridge Over The River Kwai as well as the majority of the hotels and hostels most tourists will visit. What many foreigners don’t know is that Kanchanaburi itself is the third largest province in Thailand with so much more to offer than the Erawan Waterfalls and The Bridge Over The River Kwai itself. In the near future, we shall publish a more detailed article about the activities and many more restaurants in this huge province. As for now, this article solely focuses on Kanchanaburi Tambon Ban Tai.
The best restaurants in Kanchanaburi are:
1. Keeree Mantra
Not only is this restaurant one of the most beautiful restaurants we’ve visited in Kanchanaburi, but the food they serve here is also simply mouthwatering good. The restaurant is located a little bit outside the city centre and is surrounded by beautiful nature. The restaurant is part of a melon farm and when you sit outside looking at the green mountains and the pond with fountains, it feels like you are in an oasis. The food they serve at Keeree Mantra is completely Thai, made with good-quality, fresh ingredients and all beautifully presented.
There are four highly recommended dishes that you must try. The first one is the Fried Tub-Tim Fish with Fresh Vegetables and Spicy Sauce Salad (320 THB). The ruby fish is first filleted and carved into large cubes, then deep-fried and finished with a sweet soy sauce. The fish is really easy to eat as you can pick the fish cubes with your fork, and when adding the fresh vegetables and herbs, you will get a huge flavour explosion in your mouth.
The second highly recommended dish is the Fried Fish with Thai Herbs (165 THB). These tiny fishes are deep-fried and can be devoured completely with fishbone and all. Due to the small size, the fish bones are harmless and only really crunchy. The fish itself is mostly sweet and salty. Absolutely delicious!
Finally, I would recommend both the Crispy Catfish Chili Paste Served With Vegetables (185 THB), which is a delicious spicy dip with beautiful veggies, as well as the Thai Steamed Coconut Milk Curry with Fish (160 THB), which is similar to the Cambodian Fish Amok. More information about this restaurant, including opening times, location, menu and ratings can be found on the TopTravelFoods review page of Keeree Mantra.

2. Blue Rice Restaurant
Blue Rice Restaurant is a local restaurant run by two lovely ladies for years who take really good care of their customers with excellent hospitality and farm to table Thai specialities with their own twist. On the opposite side of the restaurant, there is their own small farm where they grow their vegetables and herbs. The restaurant itself has a laid-back atmosphere and due to its location, it’s nicely quiet with a motorized boat passing by on the river every now and then. But it’s the food that makes this one of our favourite local Thai restaurants in Kanchanaburi.
Although there are several great tasting signature dishes to be found on the menu, all of which costs you 135 TH, there is one that blows us away. The Ma La Kor Phad Thai Gai seems like a normal pad Thai when served, but if you look closely, the noodles are replaced by thinly sliced papaya, similar to a papaya salad. The result is that you get a different texture and a much healthier version of a pad Thai, while flavour-wise, the pad Thai is almost identical.
The second dish that is highly recommended is the Yam So O, a pomelo salad topped with thinly sliced kaffir leaves. This unusual, yet tasty combination, are the tiny details next to the homegrown vegetables and herbs that makes this restaurant so unique.
The third highly recommended dish is the Miang Kum, an appetizer where you fold the beetle leaves into a tiny bowl and add all sorts of raw ingredients - such as shallot, ginger, lime or dried prawns - into the folded leaves and eat it as a whole. As you can create your own combinations, each bite has different flavours than the previous bites. Other recommended dishes are Ma Sa Man Curry, Gaeng Tae-Pao and Thai Style Chicken Satay. As said before, all the dishes cost 135 THB per piece.

3. On’s Vegetarian
Located in the middle of the centre, this is the most popular Thai vegetarian restaurant in Kanchanaburi where around dinnertime, hungry guests are queueing up. The restaurant is small and run by On, who also has a cooking class that you can attend. What makes this restaurant so popular is the fact that all the food is clean, affordable, highly flavoured and the portions are huge. Even as a non-vegetarian, I enjoyed every single meal I tried here and you won’t taste or notice the difference with tasty regular Thai food.
My favourite dish I tried here was the Curry Fried Rice (80 THB). This is a large plate of green curry flavoured fried rice packed with vegetables and diced tofu and topped with cashew nuts and sesame seeds. As it’s a curry fried rice, the fried rice itself is not completely dry, which was perfect.
The second highly recommended dish is the Pad See Ew (80 THB). This Thai dish is similar to pad Thai but much heartier. The dish has a lot of flavours and is served with vegetables and mushrooms. Other recommended dishes are the Banana Flower Salad (80 THB) and the Massaman Curry (80 THB).

4. Keeree Tara
Keeree Tara is one of the few highly recommended restaurants near the Bridge Over The River Kwai. First of all, the restaurant simply looks stunning with an excellent view of the bridge itself. The atmosphere is amazing with small music speakers placed throughout the garden as if you are in some sort of theme park. There are also seats available on the water, which is recommended after sunset, as during the day, you do want to sit in the shadow. Secondly, the food they serve here is really tasty too, with a focus on Thai seafood.
One of the highly recommended dishes at Keeree Tara - and listed number one in our article about the best seafood in Ayutthaya - is the Giant Freshwater Prawns Grilled (1,500 THB). This huge basket with one kilogram of freshly grilled prawns is absolutely amazing. Yes, this is not the usual dish that you easily order every day, but if you are in the mood for something special and willing to pay so much for seafood, it’s something you will remember your whole holiday. The prawns are beautiful grilled and juicy on the inside. Make sure to scoop the brains of these creatures as well as that part of the prawn has the most flavour.
The second highly recommended dish is the Deep-Fried Snake-Hand Fish with Spicy Mango Salad (380 THB). The fish itself is one of the ugliest and scariest fishes you can possibly imagine, however, the fish meat is is really tasty as it’s much stronger than other white fish. The texture of the fish is what makes it so popular and together with the topped spicy mango salad, one of the best-sellers at Keeree Tara. Other highly recommended dishes are Smoked Freshwater Fish Chili Paste with Vegetables (150 THB) and the Spicy Pomelo Salad (185 THB).

5. Tara Buree
When you look up reviews on the internet, this restaurant does not always get the highest ratings. When digging deeper into these reviews, you will notice that not everyone likes the type of food they serve. That’s because this restaurant serves traditional Thai dishes that you won’t easily find elsewhere and in my opinion, does not get the recognition it deserves. If you have tried a lot of Thai food in your life and you are looking for unique dishes, I would highly recommend giving Tara Buree a try.
There are two dishes that are highly recommended and cannot be found outside of Kanchanaburi. The first one is the Kanchanaburi Signature Spicy Mushroom Salad (480 THB). This salad is made with the famous Kanchanaburi mushroom that only grows in Kanchanaburi for several months per year. At this restaurant, they made a traditional spicy salad with this local ingredient. The second dish is the Crispy Fried Small Fish (190 THB), a dried and deep-fried local fish that only swims in the nearby waters of Kanchanaburi and is served with soy sauce. The fish is much crunchier than you expect!
Other recommended dishes at Tara Buree are the Spicy Chinese Kale Stem Salad with Shrimp, the authentically flavoured Spicy Red Curry with Redtail Fish (220 THB) and the Deep-Fried Fish with Fish Sauce (300 THB).
More information about this restaurant, including opening times, location, menu and ratings can be found on the TopTravelFoods review page of Tara Buree Restaurant.

There is a good reason why I always recommend visiting these types of restaurants during sunset.

6. Kosak Noodle
During our visits to the restaurants in Kanchanaburi, we’ve got several suggestions of local Thai restaurants in Kanchanaburi that are only known among the citizens of the city. There was one restaurant that keeps popping up during these conversations and that was Kosak Noodle. Kosak Noodle is a local restaurant that is specialized in boat noodles and is located a little bit outside of the city centre. Here, local Thai from all classes come to enjoy a bowl of this deliciously aromatic soup for only 30 THB per bowl. You can choose your type of noodle and type of protein (for example, beef or pork), however, the soup itself is all the same. It’s recommended to order baked out pork with it as well for only 15 THB. Especially around lunchtime, this restaurant is completely packed with hungry Thai.
More information about this restaurant, including opening times, location, menu and ratings can be found on the TopTravelFoods review page of Kosak Noodle.

7. Thip Phochana
Talking about a truly local restaurant in Kanchanaburi! This restaurant is that typical local restaurant with aluminium tables, located in an old building and where an old lady still works hard to serve you that dish she refined over all those years. At Thip Pochana, the ingredients that is hugely popular is the roasted pork and there are a few dishes available with their delicious roasted pork. The first highly recommended dish is the Khao Moo Deng Mixed With Moo Krob (35 THB), which is rice topped with roasted and grilled pork covered in a sweet gravy. An alternative to this signature dish is the Khao Khao Moo (35 THB), which is rice topped with stewed pork.
The second highly recommended dish at Thip Phochana is are the noodles with roasted pork. As you can select your own style of noodles, the names of these dishes are almost similar to each other. I would recommend trying the Kuay Teow Ba Mi Nam (35 THB), which is a noodle soup with thin egg noodles, dumplings, pork balls and roasted pork.

International Restaurants in Kanchanaburi
The following restaurants are not local Thai restaurants as they serve mostly international food, although some may a larger Thai cuisine section than others.
8. Din Cafe
Din Cafe is a modern restaurant that is part of the Tara Villa Riverkwai Resort, but accessible for those who are not staying in the hotel as well. The venue looks incredible with a stunning view of the river and is quite a peaceful place to have lunch and dinner, or just grab a cup of special tea with one of the many cakes they serve. But if you do get there with an empty stomach, we would recommend you to try one of the following dishes.
As mentioned earlier in this article, Kanchanaburi has a special type of mushroom that can only grow in Kanchanaburi during specific seasons. Most restaurants want to add this mushroom to some of their dishes. At Din Cafe, they added the mushroom as a topping on their burger, which is so delicious! Another tasty comforting food option is their Deep-Fried Wing Stick Chicken (160 THB), which is super crunchy with the right amount of spiciness.
Make sure to leave room for dessert as these desserts were among the best we tried in Kanchanaburi. The Legend Of River Kwai (295 THB) is a stunning looking chocolate dessert with different types of chocolate mousses and components. The most beautiful dessert we’ve seen was the Chomphu Pantip (220 THB), which is a spongy cake with strawberry jelly and presented with cotton candy. Stunning and delicious! The final recommendation is the High Tea with Signature Tea of Choice (550 THB), which contains ten different cakes and you can select one of the high-quality teas.

9. Grills House
This restaurant is specialized in grilled meats, pasta and pizzas, although over the years, the menu has changed a bit to serve the local foodies as well with a Thai cuisine section as well. Grills House is located just right outside the Kanchanaburi centre and is a spacious restaurant with plenty of indoor and outdoor seatings. As the name already suggests, most of its food is being grilled. In the case of Grills House, they grill the steaks on volcanic rocks and avoid charcoal. The Grilled Australian Angus Beef Tenderloin (200 gram) (780 THB) is one of the highly recommended grilled dishes at Grill House as well as the Barbecue Baby Back Ribs (585 THB). I believe that both the steak and the ribs are the best in town.
Other recommendations are the Pepperoni Pizza (340 THB) and the Spaghetti with Prawns, Dry Tomato and Fresh Tomato Sauce (280 THB). Although the pizza is not your typical Italian pizza as the crust is pretty thick, the taste of the pizza is excellent and the portion is really filling.

In my opinion, the best ribs in Kanchanaburi!

10. The Village Farm to Cafe
This beautiful restaurant is located directly next to Keeree Mantra, right outside the city centre and is among the most popular restaurants in Kanchanaburi. The whole setting, atmosphere and the quality of the food is something that attracts all types of visitors, from travellers to local Thai. In the back of the restaurant, there is a melon farm as well as a large grass field with a pond where visitors can walk or cycle around. Where its neighbour restaurant Keeree Mantra is specialized in Thai food, The Village Farm to Cafe is focused on Western food and Japanese-inspired desserts often served with homegrown melon. The following dishes are highly recommended.
The Pizza Termite Mushroom (395 THB) is by far the most delicious pizza we tried in Kanchanaburi. First of all, the crust is a perfect size and has perfect crispiness. Secondly, it’s topped with the earlier mentioned Kanchanaburi mushrooms, which have such a strong flavour.
The second highly recommended dish is the Baby Spare Ribs The Village BBQ Texas L (695 THB), which is a large, highly flavoured and tender barbecue sparerib served with four different dips, salad, good fries and garlic bread. If you do have room for dessert, make sure to check out the Apple Caramel Crumble Brioche (220 THB), which was our favourite dessert we tried here.

11. Library Cafe
Library Cafe is a popular restaurant with both an international as a Thai menu and is located in the middle of the centre of Kanchanaburi and can be seen as one of the finest cafes in town. The restaurant is located in a building that used to be a club and is beautifully decorated with spacious areas to enjoy a good cup of coffee with cakes or for lunch and dinner. Here are the most recommended dishes:
For Thai food, I would recommend you try one of the following bestsellers: Khao Soi with Rib (180 THB), Spare Ribs with Masala Curry (125 THB) and the Fried Noodles with Seafood (150 THB). But make sure to save some extra room for their beautiful and tasty desserts. Our favourite was the Double Chocolate Brioche (220 THB), which is a sweet brioche bun that you can infuse with chocolate sauce. The bun is covered in chocolate and served with ice cream, brownies and chocolate crumble. Another recommended dessert is their so-called Whoo!! Choux (220 THB), which is a dessert with a chow au craquelin (cream puff) with fruit and chocolate.

12. Bridge Bar & Bistro
The Bridge Bar & Bistro is the restaurant of X2 River Kwai Resort, a beautiful place next to the river and outside the city centre. The restaurant is specialized in mostly Western food options but is also a great place to grab a cup of coffee and simply enjoy the stunning view. But if you do want to grab a bite, I would recommend you to try one of the following dishes:
The tastiest burger we tried in Kanchanaburi was at Bridge Bar & Bistro. Their Beef Burger (380 THB) excels in simplicity. Just a thick single-patty beef burger with cheese, tomato, caramelized onion and lettuce served on a brioche pun. Another recommended dish is the Aussie Tenderloin Beef Bowl (480 THB), which is a beautifully grilled steak covered in a spicy dressing and served with roasted garlic.

13. Loft Restaurant & Bar
Loft Restaurant & Bar is a trendy restaurant and bar with a view on The Bridge Over The River Kwai and the river itself that opens its door at five o’clock in the afternoon. From that moment on, it’s a perfect place to watch the beautiful multi-coloured sunset while enjoying International and Thai food, as well as a large variety of alcoholic beverages. During the evening, live music performances will be held, making it also a great place to hang out in the evening just for drinks. But if you do come with an empty stomach, I would suggest trying one of the following recommended dishes.
The most ordered dish at Loft Restaurant & Bar is the Grilled Duck with Chili Paste (180 THB). The outside of the duck is really crispy with all the fat caramelized into deliciousness. The duck itself is nicely pink on the inside and to give the duck extra flavour, a spicy chilli dipping paste is served with it.
Another highly recommended dish is the Barbecue Pork Ribs (550 THB), which can be ordered in two sizes. What makes these ribs different from the other ribs mentioned before in this article is that the ribs are served with a large part of fat, similar to Japanese braised pork belly. This makes the ribs spongy and tender. If you want to eat Thai food at Loft Restaurant & Bar, I would recommend the Loft Fo (250 THB, which is a luxurious version of yen-ta-fo noodles, and the Deep-Fried Freshwater Fish in Guinea Pepper Sauce (250 THB), which is a crispy fried fish steak covered in garlic and black pepper.
