What are the best areas in Amsterdam for couples?

The best areas in Amsterdam for couples are the Grachtengordel (Canal Belt), Jordaan, Plantage & Jewish Quarter and some parts of the Old City Center. Although you can find other areas further into the city, we think that the most romantic places are in these four recommended areas. From these four areas, it is easy to explore the city by foot, have good access to nice restaurants and enjoy the canals, the architecture, shopping streets and more within easy reach. In the next paragraphs, we dive deeper into each recommended area in Amsterdam for couples.

The best area to stay in Amsterdam for couples are:

1. Grachtengordel

The Grachtengordel, which is called the Canal Belt in English, is the part behind the Old City Center. As the name suggests, this is the part where you find the picturesque houses built around the canals. During the Dutch Golden Age, it was this area that rich merchants moved into and the houses are still of excellent quality and craftsmanship. In fact, whenever you see workers renovating one of these historic houses, you should know that these workers are impressively skilled. It is no work for ordinary workers. So, staying in this area surrounded by these impressive houses with well-maintained pavement, beautiful canals and bridges that are covered in flowers, is among the most romantic as you can get in Amsterdam.

One of the most beautiful alleys in this part of Amsterdam is called the Negen Straatjes (the Nine Streets). Here, you can find all sorts of boutique shops, unique restaurants and much more. The hotels are impressive too, with all the comforts you as a couple could wish for. A stroll through this part is highly recommended and when you head up north, you enter the second most romantic area of Amsterdam, the Jordaan. In the next paragraph, we dive into the Jordaan.

2. Jordaan

Contrary to the Canal Belt, the Jordaan was a neighbourhood for the working class. It was also built during the Golden Age, but like many working-class neighbourhoods in larger cities, it was not always the safest nor the prettiest. But over time, the Jordaan transformed into a more popular area and some parts got slightly upscale. It still has its charm and the Jordaan is still known as a neighbourhood where everyone knows each other. One of the best things about the Jordaan is the people. Even for Dutch people, those living in the Jordaan are very direct in what they say and that says a lot. The streets in this area a beautiful and the houses are not richly decorated as in the Canal Belt, but still have that unique architecture Amsterdam is known for. During the evening, make sure to visit one of the many local bars where typical Dutch tearjerkers are blasting through the speakers. If you’re looking for charming hotels right in the middle of an iconic, authentic neighbourhood in Amsterdam close to many city highlights, then Jordaan is one of your best options.

3. Plantage & Jewish Quarter

These two neighbourhoods are located on the Eastside of the Old City Center, right behind Amsterdam’s red light district, but is much quieter than you’d expect. Most of the activities take place further down the city, so if you as a couple are looking for a relatively quiet area but still have good access to the centre as well as the train station, these two areas are definitely worth checking out. During my second visit as a couple to Amsterdam, we stayed in this area. The reason for that was because we left Amsterdam by train to our next destination, but still want to enjoy Amsterdam’s hip centre. The best way to explore the city is by renting a bike, especially when you want to visit the famous museums as these are located a bit away from this area. But renting a bike is recommended no matter which area you’re staying in.

4. Oud Centrum

While Oud Centrum (Old City Center) is often recommended as the best place to stay in Amsterdam, as a couple, you might not want to stay right at the hedonistic epicentre of the city. Especially around the Wallen, Amsterdam’s red light district, the hotels and its visitors can be sketchy. But the Old City Center is larger than that particular area and there are definitely some good parts. During my first visit to Amsterdam as a couple, we did in fact stay at the Old City Center, but on the west side, on the Spuistraat to be precise. Staying in this part of the centre does come with a few benefits. First of all, you have good access to the city’s highlights such as Dam Square, Damrak, The Kalverstaat (for shopping) and the Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets). With just a few minutes walk, you’re at the canals. And even a stroll through The Wallen is part of your visit to Amsterdam, even when you’re a couple. So, my advice is when you’re picking this area, which is the perfect location, stay on the west side of the Old City Center.

You can find plenty of hotels further into the city, towards Oud-Zuid and Oud-West, however, in order to get to the “romantic” parts of Amsterdam, meaning the picturesque canals and the boutique shops, you must stay more towards the Old City Center and its surrounding neighbourhoods. If you’re on a stricter budget, you could stay at areas like Westerpark and Amsterdam-Noord, but these are not the most beautiful areas.
