All elements for the perfect recipe for a great destination.

One of the good things about Medellin is the fact that the people are extremely proud of the city. 1. El Poblado

El Poblado is by far the most popular area in Medellin for tourists. Surrounded by the popular nightlife venues, excellent restaurants, high-end apartments and hotels and other convenient facilities, the convenience is what tourists seek. As not every neighbourhood in Medellin is safe for foreigners, you can’t just pick a random area and explore it for yourself. El Poblado is your safest bet when it comes to comfort and it has been the go-to area in Medellin for tourists for a long time for a very good reason. The

Within El Poblado are several other neighbourhoods. In our article about where to stay in Medellin for nightlife, we top-listed Provenza as the number one. This small area has amazing restaurants, (cocktail) bars, salsa bars and nightclubs to offer. Another popular area within El Poblado is Manila. Yes, El Poblado is visited by the majority of the tourists, but contrary to what you might have read elsewhere, there are plenty of Colombian people who love to hang out in this hugely popular area. But if you want to stay in a more authentic neighbourhood with fewer tourists, then the next recommended area in Medellin should be more interesting.

2. Laureles

Laureles is the oldest part of the city of Medellin, which is the opposite of the trendy neighbourhood El Poblado. In Laureles, you can find many ex-pats who live here as this area is well-maintained, safe and full of exciting entertainment venues such as restaurants, bars and cafes. Laureles is the second most popular area to stay in Medellin for tourists and other types of travellers and a much quieter area. Around Avenida Nutibara, you can find amazing restaurants, while LA 70 (pronounces as la Setenta) is the area where you can find all sorts of local bars. During the night, head over to La 33, which is close by if you want to explore typical Colombian nightclubs. With great access to public transportation, you can be in every part of Medellin within half an hour. All-in-all, Laureles is a great alternative to the trendy and slightly touristy El Poblado.

3. Envigado

Envigado is mostly a residential area and does not offer a wide variety of hotels. It is a relatively safe area and you won’t find (m)any tourists here. Envigado is absolutely not our first choice for travellers who visit Medellin for the first time, but we do give this area as an alternative option for those who do want to explore things on their own. For exciting (local restaurants), head over to la calle de la buena mesa. Here you can also find local bars and other venues that offer cheap, local foods and drinks. Envigado is an interesting area to see how the people from Medellin live.
