With that being said, let’s jump to our recommendations.

In our opinion, here are the fifteen of Bangkok’s sightseeing highlights we write our article around, meaning that you can visit the majority of these highlights in each area. At the bottom of this article, you can find a map with both the recommended areas as the city highlights.

1. The Grand Palace
2. Wat Arun
3. Wat Pho
4. Yaowarat (Chinatown)
5. Chatuchak Weekend Market
6. Ratchada Night Market
7. Khao San Road
8. Mahanakhon Skywalk
9. Lumphini Park
10. Bang Krachao
11. Erawan Shrine
12. Soi Cowboy
13. Discover the canals
14. Food discovery
15. Visit a sky bar

It’s very important to book a hotel near either a BTS Station or an MRT Station. The BTS, also known as the SkyTrain, is an elevated train that is the fastest way to move around in Bangkok. The MRT is the metro, which recently was extended, including to city highlights such as The Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Chinatown. If you are staying in Bangkok for sightseeing, you must use these types of public transports in order to move around fast and efficient.

The best areas to stay in Bangkok for sightseeing are:

1. Silom

We believe that Silom is the best area to stay in Bangkok for sightseeing as it’s surrounded by many city highlights and has a connection with both the BTS and the MRT. With the extension of the MRT, you can easily take the metro to Chinatown, Wat Arun, Wat Pho. Silom is also located close to the river, giving you access to the boat service as well as a nice view of the city if you stay in a large hotel. You can access the boat service by taking the BTS to Saphan Thaksin, which is just a few BTS stops further. Silom is located right next to Lumphini Park, surrounded by rooftop bars and known for Patpong, which is an adult entertainment area. Out of the fifteen highlights described in the introduction of this article, Silom has great access to the majority of these recommended highlights. The only downside is that it’s a bit difficult to get to Silom from Suvarnabhumi airport.

Pros: the best area to stay in Bangkok for sightseeing, great access to Bangkok’s highlights, good connection with public transportation.

Cons: more difficult to reach from Suvarnabhumi airport compared to other areas.

2. Sukhumvit

Sukhumvit is one of the most popular areas to stay in Bangkok due to its central location, access to the Skytrain (Sukhumvit Line) and its many nightlife possibilities. But for those who are looking for a great area to stay in Bangkok for sightseeing, the most important factor is the connectivity to public transportation. In general, you can stay near any BTS Station on the Sukhumvit Line. But the closer you are to the city centre, the pricier the hotels get. Ideally, you want to stay near Asoke as Asoke has the connection to both the MRT as the BTS. But if you stay in Lower Sukhumvit, for example at On Nut, you find much cheaper and spacious hotels. Your ride from On Nut to Asoke by BTS can easily be done in 10 minutes, so it’s well worth the consideration. If you’re planning to explore Bangkok’s nightlife as well, Sukhumvit is the best area to stay at. You have better access to night markets, bars and clubs, but to visit highlights such as The Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun, you do have to travel a bit.

Pros: good connection with public transportation, ideal for those who want to enjoy Bangkok’s nightlife, cheaper hotels can be found in Lower Sukhumvit.

Cons: not directly near Bangkok’s highlights, you do have to travel a bit.

3. Phaya Thai

Phaya Thai is yet another great area to stay in Bangkok for sightseeing as it’s located near the city centre, has direct access to the Airport Rail Link and the Sukhumvit Line and has fairly-priced hotels. In contrary to (Lower) Sukhumvit, there is not much nightlife to be found here. Aside from being a nice area to stay for sightseeing, Phaya Thai is also a popular area for shopping as it’s located near the big shopping malls. We believe that Phaya Thai does not deserve the credits it should get. You can find pretty awesome accommodations in this area. The only downside is that public transportation is not ideal as you have to go back first in order to go to the correct line. If you appreciate a bit of quietness in the evening, Phaya Thai will certainly be a good option.

Pros: good connection with public transport, direct connection with the Airport Rail Link, affordable hotels, quietness

Cons: not directly near Bangkok’s highlights, you do have to travel a bit.

4. Riverside

The Riverside in Bangkok is a great area to stay for sightseeing as well as enjoying a beautiful view from your hotel (room). Similar to Silom, you are surrounded by Bangkok’s highlights, which is ideal for sightseeing. As you are located next to the Chao Praya River, this area is relatively quieter compared to other areas, but the downside is that you don’t have direct access to public transportation. Many hotels do offer a free taxi service to one of the nearest BTS Stations, but it’s not ideal compared to other areas. On the other hand, you do have access to the Chao Praya Boat Service, which is very useful to visit places such as Chinatown (Yaowarat), Wat Pho and the Grand Palace. If you do stay in this area, make sure to have a walk through Talat Noi, one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Bangkok. You can find many old houses, and some have been partly renovated to have pretty cool coffeeshops build in.

Pros: great access to Bangkok’s highlights, relatively quiet area compared to other recommended areas, view on the Chao Praya River.

Cons: no direct access to public transportation except the boat service.

5. Khao San Road

Khao San Road is a hugely popular area to stay in Bangkok for young travellers thanks to its vibrant nightlife and abundance of cheap hostels. But Khao San Road is also surrounded by city highlights such as The Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun, meaning it’s also a great area in Bangkok for sightseeing. Besides, you can easily visit Chinatown and Chatuchak Weekend Market by taxi. The downside of staying near Khao San Road is that you are not directly connected to the public transport system. The most convenient BTS Station is Phaya Thai, for which you have to take a taxi. The most convenient MRT Station is located near the Grand Palace, which is quite the walk. You can, however, make use of the boat services to visit places such as Yaowarat or ICONSIAM. But in the end, the majority of its visitors stay near Khao San Road for its nightlife and meeting up with fellow travellers. You can combine this with plenty of sightseeing.

Pros: surrounded by some of the most popular sightseeing highlights.

Cons: no direct access to public transportation except the boat service.
